About Us

Welcome to The Wool Hub, our local crafts center where creativity comes to life! We pride ourselves on providing a warm and nurturing environment for all, to craft together and celebrate the beauty of wool!

The Wool Hub is located in the ancient wool town of Buckfastleigh in Devon. Staffed by a group of wool crafters, known collectively as the Woolly Nanas, we have expert skills gained over many years as well as teaching experience in a variety of settings. We exist to nurture creativity and confidence both in our own community and for the benefit of our world. We offer craft sessions every weekday, supporting people of all ages as well as those with learning and/or physical disability, neurodiversity and mental ill-health.

We are extremely well connected locally, having delivered the Moor Threads Community weaving project as well as working closely with Moorland Community Caring and Buckfastleigh Medical centre, for which we are currently knitting baby blankets to gift to new mothers.

Our Story

The legacy of the town's industrial past was a time of building: of affluence for some but also of poverty. This industrial period was only a short and final episode in Buckfastleigh's relationship with wool that goes back millennia. There is little evidence remaining of this earlier prosperity. Parts of the modern town are in the top 15% most deprived areas in the country, according to IMD. Many local people report feeling social isolation and loneliness whilst young people are bored and uninspired.

In response to these issues the Wool Hub was created by the Woolly Nanas in 2023, funded initially by the National Lottery, to provide a community space to enable people of all ages and abilities to meet and share, revive the old skills, and celebrate our long and proud wool heritage.
